Creating a contemporary home with all the traps and fittings to create a perfect space of relaxation, whilst paying homage to the history of the site, a result of architect Chris Yandle, this home sought to emulate the former earthquake-damaged villa that once graced the Christchurch site.

The small single-level dwelling is deliberately unannounced from the street, masking a substantial 370sqm family home. The traditional villa is unwrapped and reorganised around a central backyard that becomes the new focus of the modern home. The house forms protection from the easterly and southerly winds whilst the pitched roof screens out views from adjacent apartment blocks, creating a private and sheltered courtyard that is the focus of family life. Finished with contemporary detailing and operable screens that double as protection from the sun and privacy, with a repeating line pattern that is a defining character of historic villas that are now lost.

This repetition of line work and pattern is continued through to the bathrooms combining two different grey tiles, X-Rock and Stoneage Carrara Stack, to create two relaxing and modern bathrooms full of personality, light and style, and yet still fit within the character of the home.

Their light grey colouring provides a point of contrast against the backdrop of the dark green landscaped courtyard, the soft marbling of X-Rock on the floors and walls creates consistency and makes the space feel larger while accent features of stoneage carrara stack provide a beautiful contrast and focal point within the bathroom. Keeping these tiles in soft grey makes the room feel calm and airy, but the textures create interest and elevate the bathroom to something truly stylish and unique.  Their textures and tones complement the rest of the features running throughout the home, whilst providing a timeless quality to this house that toes the line between historic and modern perfectly.
