Case Study: NZCIS Athlete Accommodation & amenities building

Project Overview: The New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS) embarked on a project to create a five-star athlete accommodation and shared facility, distinct from the main site. The accommodation required 100 beds, achieved through 50 one-bedroom apartments, each with an additional bed in the living space. An amenities building was also included, featuring a small commercial kitchen and a large open area for relaxation or briefing sessions, adaptable for non-sporting events as well.

Design Concept: The architecture of the project drew inspiration from the existing buildings on the NZCIS site but incorporated a modern twist to create a cohesive yet contemporary feel. For the interior, the design focused on natural materials and a palette that promotes wellness and relaxation. This approach aimed to create an environment conducive to both athletic performance and recovery.

Product Choice: The design team selected Quantum's Wise Cork in Original Shell to align with the natural theme of the interiors. The cork planks provided a unique aesthetic that distinguished the apartments from other accommodation options. Additionally, the natural properties of cork, such as warmth and acoustic benefits, made it an ideal choice for this high-performance environment.

Installation: The installation of the cork tiles was straightforward, with no significant challenges encountered. The material's ease of application ensured that the project stayed on schedule and met the desired quality standards.

The Wise Cork planks exceeded expectations in terms of both quality and aesthetics. While cork as a material elicited varied opinions, its overall contribution to the space was undeniable. The product added warmth, comfort and an enhanced acoustic environment, making the apartments feel inviting and luxurious.
